Common opener problems
- The opener hums or clicks but the door does not move

Check these first (they fix a lot of calls)
- Power: confirm the opener is plugged in and the outlet or GFCI is not tripped.
- Release cord: if the red cord was pulled, the door is disconnected from the opener and must be re-engaged.
- Sensors: wipe the photo-eye lenses and check that the indicator lights are solid. A blocked or misaligned sensor stops the door from closing.
- Remote and keypad batteries: weak batteries cut range dramatically, especially in cold weather.
- Lock mode: many wall controls have a lock button that disables remotes.
- A broken spring can look like an opener problem. If the motor runs but the door barely moves, stop and check the springs.
Typical opener repairs
Many opener repairs are small: realigning sensors, reprogramming remotes and keypads, adjusting travel limits and force settings, or replacing a worn drive gear, trolley, or logic board. On a newer opener these repairs are usually worthwhile. On an older opener, parts can be hard to find and several repairs on the same unit add up quickly.
When to replace the opener instead
Replacing the opener generally makes sense when it is around 15 years old or more, when the gears are stripped, when repair parts are unavailable, or when it lacks modern safety features such as photo-eye sensors and rolling-code security. Newer openers are quieter, safer, and many offer app control and battery backup.
Chain, belt, and smart openers
Chain-drive openers are durable and cost-effective, but they are louder, which matters if the garage is attached or under a bedroom. Belt-drive openers are much quieter and a good fit for attached garages. Smart openers add Wi-Fi so you can open, close, and check the door from your phone and get alerts when it moves.

Why does my garage door opener hum but not move the door?
The most likely cause is a broken spring, since the opener cannot lift the door by itself. Less often it is a stripped drive gear or a disengaged trolley. Do not keep running it. Pull the release cord and call for service.
Why does my garage door reverse before it closes?
That is the safety system. Dirty or misaligned photo-eye sensors, an obstruction, or improper travel and force settings can all trigger it. Clean the lenses and confirm the sensors face each other.
How long does a garage door opener last?
